Several years ago, we (Heather & Liam) were sipping lattes in a little coffee shop in West Chester, PA and we noticed a man studying a map and making notes of things. This piqued our curiosity…

…So we introduced ourselves and asked him what the map was of. He told us his name was John and that he and his wife, Sarah, had just returned from a trip to Iceland and he was retracing their steps while organizing photos from their trip. Liam had just come home from a canoeing trip in Maine where they navigated by map, so with that commonality they began exchanging stories. By the time our conversation was over, we felt like we had known each other for much longer than a day. Not long after this, we met Sarah as well and they quickly became our dear friends.

Sarah, owner of Atwater Designs, is a local artist. Her specialty is creating botanical prints using the oldest photographic process: cyanotype printing. She was an art teacher at an all-girls school for many years until she recently decided to pursue her artistry full-time. Sarah was looking for a way to continue her passion for teaching and expand her business when Skillshare, an online learning platform, reached out to her. They offered to promote her course if she sent in videos of her teaching about cyanotypes. The team at Skillshare would also edit all the footage and organize it on their platform, so all she needed to do was record the videos. Rather than filming it on her iPhone, she wanted to make the most of this opportunity and ensure the content would be high quality, so she asked us to do the video work for her.

On a warm, summer day in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, we met up with Sarah in her backyard and filmed her while she talked about plants, art, and how to combine the two to make beautiful cyanotype prints. It included a lot of bloopers and laughter but the end result was exactly what Sarah was hoping to achieve. Skillshare ended up loving her first class so much they encouraged her to create more. Since then we have filmed three more courses for Sarah, all of which she was able to edit herself. (You can find Sarah's courses here!) Two of her courses were chosen as Skillshare Staff Picks, and she has been recognized as a Top Teacher out of their 8,000+ teacher community.

Creating online courses gave Sarah the opportunity to provide entertaining and educational content to her existing community while simultaneously reaching a wider audience through the platform of Skillshare. These videos also direct her new Skillshare audience to the Atwater Designs website where she sells her art and cyanotype creation kits. We're so excited to see the success Sarah's courses have had and we loved working with her!
